Cultural exchange just outside Santiago, Chile

In the fall of 2023, when we were touring with my then Death/Black Metal band in distant Latin America, we had arrived in a city just outside Santiago, Chile. There we would share the stage with four other Chilean metal bands. In a very beautiful old theater with Spanish architecture inside and outside the building, to the point that even around the stage there was carved marble. All of them had incorporated traditional instruments and costumes of their country into their music and performance, the most striking examples being wooden instruments such as the didgeridoo and the so-called death whistle, which is not a musical instrument but an instrument of war. All the musicians were so hospitable that the mother of one of the bassists brought us various dishes, all based on Chilean home cooking and traditional cuisine. We spent the whole day together exchanging stories and experiences from the daily life of each people and how they had combined their traditions with instruments and costumes in metal music. I remember it like it was yesterday and the influence of this exchange of cultural ideas, how they managed, amid the pressure, fatigue, and stress of touring, to keep me relaxed and enjoy every moment of that concert. It was a unique experience that will always remain etched in my mind and always reminds me that, amid all the hustle and bustle and stress of a tour, it is moments like these that make it unique and make you want to travel the world.
